Chapter 23

Round 1! Fight!

I had completely neglected the fact that my trusty companion had true skills. Talon was full of surprises as he grew in size and maturity.

Feylux moved to the fallen target and sniffed at its body. Talon better not have killed the damn thing. The odds of us finding another enchanted clearing inhabited by moonfire moths were more than likely low.

Collect the creature. It still lives. Feylux chirped a rapid bark, and Talon came to his side. The proud warrior sniffed our newest acquisition and licked the damn thing.

“You’re ridiculous.” I scratched Talon’s back at the tail. Just like any feline, he loved it.

I grabbed the moth with my bare hands and gently set it inside a leather sack we had brought for them. The sack was stiff enough not to break their delicate wings, but strong enough to keep them contained all the same. There was no escape unless the sack somehow opened.

A screech filled with rage and hate slammed into us. I whirled around, thinking I would see some pissed-off moonfire moths. This, however, was nothing of the sort. The monster before us—a literal horror—floated through the air. I could see the forest on the other side of his ragged body.

“Monster! Die! Merchant!” It pointed at me and just as quickly raised its hands into the air. A fierce chill enveloped us all. Suddenly, a thick frost covered everything. The creature laughed maniacally as a frosty bolt shot from its hand, intended for me. I jumped to the side as it slammed into the stump, sending frozen chunks of our dinner in every direction.

Feylux jumped in front of Amara. Not me, of course, his literal companion, but Amara.

Duskwraith!

The shadowy figure flickered in and out of a solid state, moving from a corporeal body to an incorporeal state.

My enhanced brain utilized this unfortunate moment to recall the loaned bestiary’s information on the duskwraith monsters:

Duskwraith

Tier 2

A shadowy, spectral entity that roams at twilight, its form flickering between mist and darkness. They appear as shifting figures cloaked in cold, flowing darkness, their glowing ice-blue eyes burning with malice.

These rarely encountered monsters can be vocal and unnerving, whispering fragmented words, moaning in distorted echoes, or even shrieking in unnatural tones. These sounds can be disorienting, filling the air with an eerie presence that unsettles even seasoned adventurers.

I shook the wall of text out of my vision, barely taking the time to analyze it again. There was a time and a place. The place might be here, but now was not the time.

“Amara! Get behind us!” I didn’t even have time to look in her direction, but through the corner of my eye, I saw her move somewhere behind us. A sweet, familiar scent flowed past me and seemed to be directed at the duskwraith. I felt calmer and more focused as I breathed deeper.

Talon and Feylux both jumped in front of me.Talon seemed poised to play with it, and Feylux found a strong position. His fur turned bright red before fluctuating between a dark orange and back again.
